Draft for approval · ARCTIS-02 · Version 0.1
Prepared 19 October 2026 · Approval and effective dates: pending

This strategy proposes a focused programme for the reporting years 2026–2027, 2027–2028 and 2028–2029. The targets below are proposals for approval, not claims of completed work or guaranteed funding.

1 Research priorities

Multilingual corpora and translation: investigate translation choices across languages, genres and specialist domains using well-documented parallel or comparable corpora and terminology resources.

Interpreting and spoken communication: study interpreting strategies, speech features, terminology and communication under realistic task constraints, with appropriate permissions for recordings.

AI and language technologies: evaluate human and machine-assisted translation, transcription and corpus workflows using explicit criteria, documented tools and human review.

Multilingual meaning and social context: examine language contact, cultural representation and public or specialist discourse through questions connected to translation and interpreting.

2 Project selection and supervision

A proposal must identify its question, relevance, lawful data, methods, coordinator, supervision needs, timetable and intended output. Initial work will prioritise a small number of feasible projects over an extensive list of unfinished initiatives.

No more than two supervised pilot projects at a time are proposed during the initial year. Access, ethics and resource checks precede data collection. Each project maintains a brief record of decisions, sources and contributions.

3 Teaching and research connection

Open seminars provide feedback on work in progress. Workshops develop corpus searching, annotation, translation analysis and research communication. Staff development, mobility and internships may contribute to research when their learning objectives and responsibilities are agreed in advance.

Student participation remains educational and supervised. Formal assessment, thesis supervision and credit recognition follow the relevant University procedures.

4 Proposed milestones

2026–2027: establish a project and output register; deliver four to six open seminars and one methods workshop; complete one supervised pilot report.

2027–2028: deliver four to six open seminars and two methods workshops; complete two research reports, including an extension or replication where feasible.

2028–2029: deliver four to six open seminars and two methods workshops; complete two research reports and one synthesis reviewing the three-year programme.

Targets will be adjusted through the annual plan when participation, supervision, permissions or resources require it. Publication acceptance, grant awards and participant numbers are not guaranteed outcomes.

5 Outputs and evidence

Suitable outputs include a research report, a documented corpus or terminology resource, a teaching unit, a conference contribution or a methods note. Each research report states its question, sources, method, results, limitations and contributors.

An event is counted only after delivery and documentation. Unique participants and repeat attendances are distinguished where reliable records exist. Programme countries are not reported as attendance statistics or permanent partnerships.

6 Resources and cooperation

The core programme uses agreed supervision and approved resources. Funding applications may support additional activities but do not constitute funding awards. Resource commitments require the relevant authorisation.

Collaborative activities identify participating institutions and agreed roles. Open dissemination is pursued only where copyright, confidentiality and data-protection conditions permit.

7 Review and approval

The Director reviews progress annually using documented outputs, participant feedback, resource use and unresolved issues. A final review in 2029 informs the next strategy.

This strategy takes effect only after actual approval under the Centre’s and University’s applicable arrangements. The approved version records the signature, approval date and review date.
